Does ikkyu really mean anything? Tuesday February 6

I got my test results back for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. I passed the highest level, level one, with a score of 80% (flat even, 320/400). This test is reading- and comprehension-heavy, and I think this explains why I was able to pass this level despite not being able to speak as well as I should.

Michael once said this is a test to "take, and then say, 'yeah, I took that, so what'". There is more difficult Japanese proficiency test out there, the JETRO test, which actually tests business-interaction communication. I've had thoughts about taking this test.

Of course, it's not all about passing tests -- it's about actual levels. They have a unwritten rule in my company not to use Japanese where English could be used -- we've noticed it sometimes makes life just, well, easier.

Then again, I've never been one to make my life easier.
