health care Monday April 18

i'm not trying to sound too much like dad here, but.

also, i am not complaining THAT i have health insurance -- that's a great deal for me -- but:

what the heck are all of these hmo outfits doing?!

i have an "open access" program where i can go to a PPO network or an HMO network, but i get better benefits on the HMO. it took me 20 minutes and 3 people on the phone to just find a doctor that i could get my stitches out with.

stitches. i could do it myself with scissors. but that's not the point. the point is that whoever does do it, if i don't want to pay a lot, has to be in my HMO network.

listen to me. i'm complaining about HMOs and health care. i'm such a baby.

Mark -- There is nothing wrong sounding like DAD! Health care in America is a real mess. I could write a book about the way health care should be ---- I believe New Zealand, Canada and Britian have a fairer system. Rich Republicans will never change the system for the disadvantaged. I will stop there. DAD

rich doctors and insurance companies dont really want to change it and they are the ones lobbying. overhauling the system is politically risky for whomever goes after it. paul krugman has written some interesting articles on the state of heath care in the US and how our system is the worst in industrialized countries when you factor infant mortality rate and cost into the picture. you can find his articles at www.nytimes.com.

last year I switched insurance because of a new job. first time to the doctor, I called the WI BCBS and asked: I live in IL but work in WI; can I go in IL or do I have to go to docs in WI. Answer: go in IL. Now they tell me I was out of network, even though the group I go to is part of their net work. NOTHING I can do, except PAY.. including an emergency room visit over 2K... I'm not done fighting with them; I am going to file a complaint; meantime: I have to pay. I HATE insurance companies (except Allstate)... arrrgghh

Canada's healthcare may be more fair for the disadvantaged but the actual healthcare they get because of that system is terrible. If someone had diagnosed my Dad with his problems while he was living there instead of him having to wait until he moved back to Texas - he might still be alive.

You're not a baby. You're a grownup. Welcome to the club. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be everything it's cracked up to be at a younger age. And responsibility is totally bogus.
