april's almost over Wednesday April 27
i get my life back in a few days from the auditorium! yay!
cake Thursday April 21
plinko and i went to go see cake and gomez at the assembly hall last night.
initially, i wanted floor "seats", which means that you stand up by the stage, but because i was sidetracked by life, i didn't end up calling until the floor had sold out. instead, i sat in the B section, in the dead center.
what this means is that i had an excellent view, and excellent seat, and it wasn't too loud for me. no one was encroaching on my personal space. i must be getting old when these things are important to me at a concert.
plinko likes cake, but probably not enough to buy a ticket at his own accord: he said that he enjoyed gomez more. nonetheless, during the cake performance, he was sitting -- as was i -- when most of the rest of the audience was standing. yet, due to the gradient of the seating, we could still see the stage perfectly.
john mccrea of cake, the lead singer, was doing a little audience participation bit towards the end of one of the songs; i think it was never there. plinko wasn't sold, and i was only singing lightly as not to disturb the patrons in front of me.
john mccrea called out the seated sections as non-participatory, and made various political references to those of us "on high", looking down on the common people, making them do all the work, and just enjoying doing nothing. plinko and i laughed at that, but then after trying to get the seated section engaged again, the light board op turned on the "crowd" lights because we were singing.
mister mccrea then looked out again and told us we were awful, and that the bottom section should teach us a lesson or something. then the following dialogue happened, almost verbatim (as i recall it):
"..and i see this bearded guy out there, sitting like this [puts hand on chin, covering mouth], and he's not doing anything; i think the downstairs needs to storm up there--"
i looked over at plinko. his hand was on his chin, his hand covering his mouth. john mccrea is pointing in our direction. there's no one around us meeting that description.
at a show of 2,200 people, cake's lead singer notices plinko for not singing along. needless to say, i was amused. as was plinko. apparently, this isn't the first time he's been called out by an onstage performer... but that's a different, far less amusing story, probably because it doesn't involve cake.
they played ruby sees all, jolene, and guitar. this mug was ecstatic.
health care Monday April 18
i'm not trying to sound too much like dad here, but.
also, i am not complaining THAT i have health insurance -- that's a great deal for me -- but:
what the heck are all of these hmo outfits doing?!
i have an "open access" program where i can go to a PPO network or an HMO network, but i get better benefits on the HMO. it took me 20 minutes and 3 people on the phone to just find a doctor that i could get my stitches out with.
stitches. i could do it myself with scissors. but that's not the point. the point is that whoever does do it, if i don't want to pay a lot, has to be in my HMO network.
listen to me. i'm complaining about HMOs and health care. i'm such a baby.
back from vacation, back to reality Saturday April 9
well, i never got to talk about los angeles the way i wanted to. certainly, i had a lot to say about it. unfortunately, i found out the hard way what happens when you go on vacation:
work is piling up, waiting for you when you get back. and it's exponentially worse, depending on how long you were gone. eight days is pretty long.
i have just dug out that mess, but unfortunately, i've landed smack dab in the middle of, uhm, the april calendar. the "we have events every day of the week" april calendar. this week was "india night", tomorrow is michael ian black. monday starts atius-sachem. so on so forth.
anyway, please browse my pictures from both spring break and our party last weekend. i will attempt to write more, but until i have time to do so, i have at least been updating my pictures.
we appreciate your patronage.
