okay Thursday October 30

so i'm relenting a little: i'm not going to blog anything serious, but e-mails like this one have to go up:

Subject: guster show/ BNL Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2003 10:46:01 -0600 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Hi-

I just thought you might like to know the following. I came accross your Guster show recording via guster.com boards and knowing that the Barenaked Ladies are big Guster fans, I passed on a copy of the show to the guys after their concert in Milwaukee last night. They thought it was great. So, you can be happy in knowing that BNL are happilly listening to your recording as they traverse the country in their tour busses.

Cheers!

friends Wednesday October 22

i'd like to thank all of my friends for being supportive of me in this emotionally-difficult time. for those of you who don't know, cara decided recently that she'd like to go it alone for the duration of her time in spain. while i feel that this decision is ultimately good for her, it still hurts. and that's where i've been these past couple days, working at foellinger 'til the wee hours, talking to people, and trying my best to get over it as maturely as possible.

it's been a strange week, it's only tuesday, and i've been documenting the whole thing on my elph for your voyeuristic pleasure lateron.

cubs

i haven't been particularly busy on any one thing, but it's been a funky past couple of weeks in general. it's time to break out of that funk, and no one's going to get me out of that funk except me. i've got to turn it around by myself.

i think that the cubs losing last night really helped matters, though -- as much as i wanted to see them go to the series, it would have most certainly made me waste even more of my time sitting at murphy's with naomi watching them get so close and then lose. nate summed it up best by saying that this is the way of the cubs: "extreme excitement followed by extreme disappointment". naomi, you know i've had a good time with you, that's not the issue. it's just that i wasn't doing other things, like posting to the blog, or giving myself enough time to be alone to really think about my life (and therefore having anything meaningful to blog).

jason the sales manager at the radio station asked me if i did any web work on the side because a client of his asked about me. i can't deny that the radio station website hasn't been a great way for me to get new business. i think i finally have a handle on the business now; it doesn't consume my life because i have people helping me, and i put it into perspective. as a result, i'll probably continue with it for the rest of this year, or as long as i have clients. it's a tough decision whether or not to seek out new ones, because i feel like if i do that, then i'm locking myself into this line of work for longer than i potentially want to do it.

in other news, we're at t minus 33 days until spain. practically a month, it's a snap.

bitter Wednesday October 8

as seen on leslie's profile today:

just because i always have the wrong answer in my 231 class doesn't mean the bitchy sorority girls can look at each other like they're so much better than me... i mean, seriously, just because i'm wrong alot doesn't take away from the fact that they are terrible people with no souls.

and i thought i didn't like what the greek system does to people.

details

it's amazing to me how some people don't pay attention to details. there's some artwork on display here at espresso, and the one in front of me is this interesting piece that is about the american public's fascination with watching violence.

however, the blurb beneath the picture is all written in times new roman. all i have to say is that i were in the art market, i would never purchase anything where the author failed to make his or her package complete: artwork for sale does not stop at the canvas but continues to marketing and display, and times new roman doesn't sell anything. details count, and i don't understand why some people fail to understand that. if you do something, do it well.

cell phone mania Wednesday October 1

two weeks ago, my cell phone just stopped working. funny, since i only transferred the contract from schaffer a couple of months ago, and already it had broken. that rat fink. either way, once in the contract, it was going to cost me $230 ($180 cancel + monthly bill) to get out of the contract, or i was going to have to purchase a new phone (at least $50, plus bill).

as a result, i was in a small financial crunch, because all the bills came at once (as they have a large tendency to do). on the way to rectify this situation, ashley was in the car, and she noted that she had an old sprint phone she wasn't using. turned out to be the exact same phone. go figure.

and i took it to the store, and they switched the service at no cost, and i didn't have to resign anything. perfect. however, this new phone is not so new: it has a notorious history, one which i felt i should share with my web-reading audience.

weird if you're not singing jon bon jovi at the moment, you missed the joke

ashley said that this phone came from a man named mario fernandez, and then she told me the story of mario and his phone.

a long time ago in a place far, far away, a woman by the name of ashley wanted to go to the sugar bowl. the time was a time when the illini had a football team worthy of such a bowl, and the place was champaign-urbana, illinois. ashley purchased tickets ahead of time online, and then they were recalled, and there was a mess about who got tickets and who didn't. then she received some from ron turner (the illini head coach) personally; in the end, she had four tickets face-valued at $150 each. she did not need all of these tickets, naturally, so ashley decided to sell them.

one of them went to a man by the name of mario fernandez, who worked at ashley's namesake workplace, kennedy's. when this story was relayed to me, ashley gave the following description:

mario fernandez is a bad person. he is a womanizer, he does not care about anything but himself, he is a liar -- actually, a pathological liar -- and there is nothing good about him. he only had one friend, his roommate, and they were friends because they were exactly alike.

at this point i began to wonder what mario fernandez could have done to make himself be remembered so negatively in the mind of one of his coworkers. well, he did not have $150 at the time that the ticket was transferred to his possession, so he indicated that he would pay ashley at a later date.

after six months, he had yet to pay her, despite her continued requests. personally, anyone who fails to pay money owed when it is asked for is treading dangerous ground, but a sheer avoidance of the debtor's request is simply despicable. so, approximately six months later, ashley talked to her brother jordan, who indicated that mario fernandez was leaving town the very next day, debt unsettled.

thus, without calling or otherwise notifying mario fernandez, she called on his soon-to-be-vacant apartment. he was not expecting her, and when she requested the money, he said that he did not have the money or checks to write at that point in time. since she knew that he was lying, as he had stayed in town only to pay bills with, well, checks, she decided that nothing would make mario fernandez tell the truth, and that he would say anything to get out of his $150 liability.

therefore, ashley picked up the last two things in the otherwise-empty apartment: a nice electronically-programmable fan, and a sanyo 4500 cellular phone. she walked out the door saying that she would return these collateral items when she received the check in the mail, as he had been promising.

fast-forward over a year, and no check has ever come for ashley. therefore, i am now the owner of mario fernandez's phone. if he ever sends that check, i will not return the phone to him, as i feel that he should know what it is like to spend your own money in good faith only to have the other person deceive you. i sincerely hope that mario fernandez has since figured out that this modus operandi is not a societally-accepted one, and is now too guilty to pay his assumedly-forgotten debt.

in the meantime, though, i have his phone. and, when i turned it on, the message (which i have since changed) said:

World's Sexiest Man

ashley assured me otherwise, actually, and she said that one of the points of contention between ashley and mario fernandez awhile ago was that he had interest in getting to know her (in the biblical sense), and she found his appearance and his personality utterly repulsive. also, he was not eager to pay the $150. interesting possible connection. i told ashley that she should have chopped off his male anatomy and kept that (in a jar of formaldehyde, of course) as collateral.

so, i turned on the phone and began entering my phone numbers into it. soon, i noticed a certain pattern of the types of names that already existed in the phonebook:

playa the total count: male names 5, female ones 23. there were also two carrie entries, one denoted by a zero at the end. way to be, mario. carrie's a good name.

the full list starts with amanda and ends with sara, apparently he had not been working the t-z section of the alphabet fully enough, it is my assumption that he was merely working in order, and that sara had yet to submit to his womanizing desires.

i've considered calling these women now, and when they pick up, i'd say, "hey, it's the world's sexiest man, baby, what's up?" but then i figured that i'm not good at talking like a tool, and they'd probably figure it out right away. so i'll just erase them.
