dammit Tuesday March 4
the study abroad office notified me this morning that the program at ICU is a year-long program only; they were mistaken. therefore, i will either be studying abroad for a year, not at all, or finding a different program (unlikely). what to do?

Like I said before, I'd go for a year. Good times. Hey, when you're older you're gonna have to pay ALL on your own just to set foot on Japan's soil. Bad times. - Ashley on March 5, 2003 10:12 PM
I would recommend the year deal, too. You obviously love the culture--what better than to emmerse yourself in it for a year, find out what *really* makes it tick? I, personally, don't think I could study abroad anywhere for a year because of homesickness and the feeling of "but I just got here, I don't want to leave!" when your time is up. Do you have time to really sit down and think about it (pros/cons list and all)? - Liz on March 6, 2003 08:22 AM
Go for the year...I have been here about a month and the thought of leaving is so awful, I know I am going to regret only going a semester. - nate on March 6, 2003 05:11 PM
what fun are postings unless someone disagrees - i hereby register my negative vote on a year. as demonstrated in my email to you (phooze) there are many factors here and I say with such a weighty committment for something that you are hesitant to strongly committ to, stick around and go over there after you graduate as planned. - Ashley on March 6, 2003 06:31 PM
Hey, I like that idea, too. I just don't want you to miss out... so go now, go later, whenever... just go. Ha, sounds like I am trying to get rid of you (which I hope you know I am not). - Todd on March 6, 2003 10:10 PM
I don't know what was in your email Nate, but judging from this alone we probably share a lot of thoughts on the matter. - nate on March 7, 2003 12:25 PM
to clarify - my email contained no positions, only things to think about. but here's my general objection - studying abroad is overrated. dont get me wrong, i love travelling and learning about cultures and expanding your horizons, but the real thing that most people seem to look for in studying abroad is getting away. 'finding themselves' if you will because they dont know how to do it in the context of their usual life and then when they come back, all that self-discovery and independence gets thrown away. you want to see the world? cool. i am for that. you want to find yourself? then dont run away from life by trying to escape. not that i mean to imply either for you my dear brother - simply my general thoughts on the matter. - reva on March 7, 2003 03:51 PM
I think studying abroad for your entire senior year might be a bit much. Just my personal opinion. Draw your own conclusions. - mark on March 7, 2003 10:06 PM
well...it's not my real senior year. :) - Todd on March 8, 2003 02:43 PM
I totally disagree. For the exact same reason that I argued with my high school ex who graduated a year early and said that she was a senior as she was leaving. If you leave for a year and come back most of your friends will be gone, your job may be gone, and the campus will have a whole year of growth on you. You won't be spending the time with everyone you've known for four years, reveling in the fact that they're almost done, that they've made it through, and that they've all been friends for so long. That's what your senior year is, it has nothing to do with what year is your last. Coming back for the '05 season you won't be a senior, you'll be wrapping up. - Todd on March 8, 2003 02:46 PM
Hm... if that sounded unduely harsh it wasn't supposed to. I didn't mean that leaving would be a bad choice, just that when you come back it in fact won't be your senior year. I was just sayin', that's all. - Mark on March 8, 2003 07:23 PM
nah, i get it.. but then again, i guess i don't feel a need for a kickin' back senior year like that; i don't know, i just thought this year would be like that ...and i noticed that based on how i am, i keep myself too busy to ever kick back and have a "senior year" like i did in high school. - Todd on March 9, 2003 03:02 PM
I don't think it's really about kickin' back, I mean I won't graduate if I do.
